SEELANGS:Will Ryan: The American Thinker is a far-right distributor of mad American conspiracy theories. Why on earth should SEELANGS give it publicity? SEELANGS is for serious academic discussion of the languages, literatures, and history of the Slavic world. Any more trash of this kind and I shall leave.
Boris Dagaev: Mel’čuk is a well-known linguist and a dissident, and he is articulating ideas that I have personally heard from quite a few Soviet expatriates. So, for example, if someone is interested in studying academically (i.e. from a historical and cultural perspective) how Soviet dissidents have become eager purveyors of this kind of "trash", this article may prove a useful piece of data for research...
Alina Israeli: For those who would like to study the phenomenon, I can name another person who progressed along the same path, Владимир Фрумкин, who made his name on promoting Галич and Окуджава. His piece was in “Chaika” online magazine. He suggested, among other things, that all Democrats move to California and leave “them” alone.
Но, вообще-то, если кому интересно, неплохо понимать, что у SEELANGS другие задачи и там бури кипят иначе, более американисто, что ли. Да хоть мульон. Мое наблюдение состояло в том, что Вы умудрились добавить в свое сообщение цитату с определением термина, которая работает против Вашего же аргумента о том, что контекст непременно должен предшествовать.
Количество исправлений в сообщении со стихотворением никоим образом не подрывает мои аргументы по вопросу, с которого началась тема.

Diane Martin> A literary translator owes loyalty to a source and a target audience in ways that a reteller of common myths in the public domain, say, does not.
In my experience, most professional translators and scholars of literature and languages accept this truism without much thinking and happily move on as if a matter under discussion were settled by a mere invocation of a general principle.
We are not dealing with an abstract principle here, though. We are talking about a particular work by a particular human being who stands accused of "distortion" (Paul B. Gallagher) and "violation" (Diane Martin). Admittedly, not high crimes. Still, wouldn't it behoove this professional community to ask themselves whether its outspoken members have in fact proven their case that Mashinski's poem is a clear distortion/violation of the author's intent and/or a translator's responsibility?
As I stated in a previous message, I don't believe Mashinski has violated her professional responsibility as a translator, because her translation stands firmly within the boundaries of the state of the art of the Russian tradition of poetic translation. Mimicking medical terms, I'd say she has discharged her duties in accordance with the professional standard of care, and to expect more of her is unreasonable.

Diane> Ms. Mashinski has made a poem. But has she made a translation?
Yes, she absolutely has (in my opinion). There are enough objectively verifiable correspondences between the two texts that situate Mashinski's work firmly within the boundaries of what is acceptable in the Russian tradition of poetic translation.
Of course, we could resort to Gasparov's method and calculate and then compare, but that might be too dry :)
R. M. Cleminson> It's a question of topic and focus. ... Passive constructions are also characteristic of the language of the natural sciences
I'd say it is only partially true that the calls to eliminate passive voice are about topic and focus. Even in the examples referenced by Aline above, they are more about constructing a favorable image of the author, sometimes bordering on shameless self-promotion, than about expressing objective reality.
R. M. Cleminson> As for the students who declare that "there is no passive", I suspect that they are falling into the common error of equating a category with its grammatical expression.
I'm afraid this is similar to what happened with the original rant. The author seems to confuse the categories of causation and agency with their grammatical expressions in two languages, but his approach to sharing his observations (whether I agree or disagree with them is of secondary importance) has made an open public discussion very difficult (at least for me). The rant is very minimally about objective language facts (we've been given a single example preceded and followed by sweeping generalizations), but more about the author's personal feelings about what appears as facts to him. It is also about his personal practice ("an ongoing challenge [he] face[s] in translating Russian to American English"). A quick search reveals that it's many many years of practice. It would be reasonable to conclude that his generalizations are heavily influenced by a kind of selection bias towards whatever texts the market brings to him.
